Common causes of "Windsurf not working"
If Prismix shows Windsurf as "Operational" but AI features aren't working:
- Credits exhausted — Windsurf uses a credit system for AI features. Free tier has monthly limits; check your remaining credits at codeium.com/windsurf/credits.
- Cascade chat not responding — Cascade (the agentic chat feature) is more resource-intensive than inline completions. If the chat hangs but completions work, Cascade may be degraded separately.
- Model backend switched — Windsurf supports multiple AI backends (Claude, GPT-4, Gemini). If one backend has an outage, switching models in Settings → AI Model can restore functionality.
- Extension outdated — Windsurf updates frequently. An outdated version can lose API compatibility. Update via the IDE's built-in updater.
- VPN or firewall interference — Windsurf's AI backend calls can be blocked by corporate firewalls or VPNs. Try disabling them temporarily to isolate the issue.
- Context window too large — Very large files (>100KB) or many open tabs can cause AI completions to time out. Reduce open tabs or break files into smaller modules.
