GitHub Copilot not working? Common fixes

If the status shows "Operational" but Copilot isn't working in your IDE:

  • Completions not appearing in VS Code — open the Output panel → GitHub Copilot Log. A 401 means your sign-in expired. Run Sign in to GitHub Copilot from the Command Palette.
  • Extension version mismatch — update the GitHub Copilot and GitHub Copilot Chat extensions. Go to Extensions → "GitHub Copilot" → check for updates.
  • Proxy or firewall blocking — Copilot makes outbound HTTPS connections to copilot-proxy.githubusercontent.com. Check your corporate firewall if you're on a managed machine.
  • Language not supported — Copilot works best with mainstream languages. For niche file types, completions may be sparse or absent even when the service is operational.
  • Subscription lapsed — if your GitHub account's Copilot subscription expired, you'll get a 402 / subscription error in the logs. Check github.com/settings/copilot.
  • JetBrains IDE issues — try restarting the IDE and checking that the plugin is enabled under Settings → Plugins.
