📋 Which Microsoft Copilot are you using?

Microsoft uses the "Copilot" name for three separate products. Each can fail independently:

Free Copilot
copilot.microsoft.com or Edge sidebar Powered by Azure OpenAI + GPT-4o.
Windows Copilot
Windows 11 taskbar button (Win+C) Can be toggled in Settings → Personalization → Taskbar. Disabled by some org policies.
Microsoft 365 Copilot
Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint License assigned by IT admin. Not available for individual purchase.

💻

Missing from Windows 11 taskbar

Settings → Personalization → Taskbar → toggle Copilot on. Some Windows cumulative updates reset this toggle. If the option is greyed out, org policy is the reason.

🌐

Not responding in Edge or copilot.microsoft.com

Usually a platform outage or a login session issue. Check prismix.dev/service/microsoft-copilot and try signing out and back in at copilot.microsoft.com.

📝

"Copilot not available" in Word or Teams

M365 Copilot requires a paid add-on license (~$30/user/mo) your org must purchase and assign. You cannot activate this individually — contact your IT administrator.

🚫

Blocked by organization policy

IT admins can disable Copilot via Group Policy or Intune. If Copilot is missing on your work device, it is an intentional restriction. Contact IT helpdesk to request access.

🌐

Not available in your region

Microsoft Copilot is not available in all countries. Some regions have no access at all; others have limited functionality due to local data regulations. Check Microsoft's region availability list.

🔑

Stuck on sign-in / Microsoft account loop

Clear Edge cookies for microsoft.com and copilot.microsoft.com (Settings → Privacy → Clear browsing data → Cookies), then sign in again. Expired session tokens cause persistent redirect loops.

Step-by-step fix

  1. 1

    Check live status

Visit prismix.dev/service/microsoft-copilot. If there is an active outage, wait for Microsoft to resolve it. You can also check the official Microsoft 365 status at status.cloud.microsoft.

  2. 2

Identify which Copilot surface is failing

Confirm whether the issue is with (A) the free Copilot at copilot.microsoft.com, (B) the Windows 11 taskbar button, or (C) Copilot inside a specific M365 app like Word or Teams. Each has a different fix path.

  3. 3

Restore Windows Copilot from taskbar settings

Press Win + I to open Settings → PersonalizationTaskbar. Scroll to the Copilot toggle and enable it. If the toggle is greyed out, your organization's policy is blocking it — skip to step 4.

  4. 4

Enterprise users: confirm org policy or request access

On work devices, run gpresult /h report.html in an elevated command prompt and open report.html — search for "Copilot" to see if Group Policy is disabling it. If yes, you need IT to update the policy or whitelist your account.

  5. 5

    M365 Copilot: verify license assignment

In Teams or Word, if you see "Copilot is not available", go to portal.microsoft.com → Users → your account → Licenses and ensure "Microsoft 365 Copilot" is listed and enabled. If it is not, your IT admin needs to assign the add-on license.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Microsoft Copilot not working?

Common causes: Azure OpenAI backend outage (check prismix.dev/service/microsoft-copilot), organization Group Policy or Intune blocking Copilot, missing M365 Copilot license for Word/Teams, Windows 11 taskbar toggle reset by an update, or regional unavailability.

Is Microsoft Copilot down right now?

Check prismix.dev/service/microsoft-copilot for live status updated every 5 minutes. For official Microsoft 365 service health, visit status.cloud.microsoft.

Microsoft Copilot missing from Windows 11 taskbar — how to restore?

Open Settings (Win+I) → Personalization → Taskbar and toggle Copilot on. If the toggle is greyed out, your organization's IT policy has disabled it. Contact your IT helpdesk.

Microsoft 365 Copilot not available in Word or Teams — why?

M365 Copilot requires a separate add-on license (~$30/user/month) on top of your M365 subscription, purchased and assigned by your IT admin. If you see "Copilot is not available", you do not have the add-on license — contact your IT department.

Microsoft Copilot blocked by organization — what to do?

On a work device, run gpresult /h report.html in an elevated Command Prompt to see active Group Policies. If "Turn off Windows Copilot" is listed as Enabled, your IT team has explicitly blocked it. Request an exception from your IT administrator.
