What's Wrong? Diagnose Fast

🚫

AI button greyed out or missing

Notion AI add-on is not active on your plan, or AI was disabled by a workspace admin. Check Settings → Plans for the AI add-on status.

⚠️

"Something went wrong" error

Server-side timeout or content too long. Try selecting a shorter passage (2-3 paragraphs) instead of a full document. Check notion.so/status for active incidents.

AI loading forever

Notion AI backend is overloaded. Wait 1-2 minutes and try again. During Notion platform updates, AI features are often degraded before core editing features.

💳

Trial limit reached

Free plan users get ~20 trial AI responses. After the trial, the button disappears until you purchase the Notion AI add-on ($8-10/member/month).

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. 1

    Check live Notion status

Visit prismix.dev/service/notion or notion.so/status. Look specifically for "AI features" status — it's listed separately from core Notion components.

  2. 2

Verify Notion AI add-on is active

Go to Notion → Settings (gear icon) → Plans. The Notion AI add-on should be listed as active. If not, you need to purchase it. On Free or Plus plans, AI requires a separate add-on purchase.

  3. 3

    Check workspace AI permissions

Workspace owners can disable Notion AI for all members. If you're not the owner, ask them to check: Settings → Settings → AI settings → ensure AI is enabled for members.

  4. 4

    Try shorter text selections

Notion AI times out on very long pages. For "Summarize page" on a 10,000-word doc, it will often fail. Instead, select 3-5 paragraphs at a time. "Improve writing" works best on paragraphs, not entire documents.

  5. 5

    Reload or reinstall Notion

Desktop app: Ctrl+R to reload. Web: Ctrl+Shift+R to hard refresh. If that doesn't help, sign out, clear all cookies for notion.so, and sign back in. For persistent issues, try reinstalling the desktop app.

Notion AI Pricing

Plan Notion AI Cost
Free Trial (~20 responses) Free, then add-on required
Plus ($16/mo) Add-on required + $10/member/month
Business ($15/mo) Add-on required + $10/member/month

Annual billing reduces the AI add-on to $8/member/month. There is no per-request limit on the add-on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Notion AI not working?

Common causes: Notion AI add-on not active on your plan, workspace admin disabled AI, active Notion AI outage (check prismix.dev/service/notion), or text selection too long for the AI to process.

Is Notion AI down right now?

Check prismix.dev/service/notion or notion.so/status. Look for the "AI features" component specifically — it can be degraded while the core editor stays operational.

Notion AI button is greyed out — why?

The AI button disappears when: the AI add-on is not purchased, your free trial is used up (~20 responses), or a workspace admin has disabled AI features. Check Settings → Plans to see your AI add-on status.

Notion AI keeps saying "something went wrong"

This is usually a timeout. Try selecting shorter text (2-3 paragraphs instead of the full page), wait 1-2 minutes and retry, or check notion.so/status for an active AI incident.

How many Notion AI requests do I get per month?

The Notion AI add-on ($8-10/member/month) has no hard request limit — only a fair-use policy. Free users get approximately 20 trial responses total before the feature is locked behind the add-on.
