Enabling Notion AI

Go to Settings & members → Plans in your Notion workspace
If on a Free or Plus plan, click Add Notion AI ($10/member/month, or $8 billed annually)

To verify: press Space at the start of a blank line in any page — the AI menu should appear

Workspace admin note: Notion AI must be enabled at the workspace level by an admin before individual members can use it. Members cannot enable it themselves — admins control access via Settings & members → Plans.

AI Writing Assistant: Blocks vs Sidebar

Inline AI (Space Bar Menu)

Click at a blank line and press Space (or type /AI) to open the inline AI menu. Options include: Draft with AI (type your prompt), Continue writing, Summarize, Find action items, Translate, Explain this, Fix spelling and grammar, Make shorter, Make longer, Change tone. The output is inserted directly as a page block.

Best for: drafting new content, inserting summaries mid-document, one-off translations

AI Actions on Selected Text (Cmd+J)

Highlight any text in a page, then press Cmd+J (Mac) or Ctrl+J (Windows) to open AI actions on your selection. You can ask AI to rewrite it, summarize it, translate it, or answer a question about it. The original text stays intact until you choose to replace it.

Best for: rewriting sections, extracting key points from long text, translating specific passages

AI Blocks (Persistent Summaries)

Type /AI summary (or /AI action items) to insert a persistent AI block. Unlike inline AI, these blocks re-run their prompt whenever the page content changes — making them great for meeting notes where you want a live-updating summary at the top. AI blocks can summarize, extract action items, translate, or run any custom prompt.

AI Chat Sidebar (Q&A)

Database Autofill: AI Properties

Database autofill is one of Notion AI's most powerful features. It auto-populates structured properties on database entries using AI prompts.

To set it up:

Open a Notion database and add a new property (Text, Select, or Multi-select)
Click the property name to open its settings
Select Autofill with AI
Write a prompt: "List the 3 action items from this meeting" or "Give a one-sentence summary"
Click Autofill to populate all current entries, or enable automatic filling for new entries

Common autofill use cases: meeting action items, project status summaries, CRM contact summaries from call notes, content calendar meta descriptions, and bug report priority assessments.
