ChatGPT Guide 2025: Features, Tips & How to Get the Most Out of It

Everything you need to know about ChatGPT — which plan to choose, which model to use, how to prompt effectively, and when to pick Claude or Gemini instead.

What Is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is OpenAI's conversational AI assistant, launched in November 2022. It runs on large language models (GPT-4o, o3, o4-mini) and can write, code, analyze data, browse the web, generate images, and now handle voice. As of 2025, ChatGPT has over 300 million weekly active users.

The free tier is genuinely useful — GPT-4o with daily limits, DALL-E image generation, and web search. Paid plans unlock higher limits, reasoning models (o3/o4-mini), and tools like Code Interpreter and Advanced Voice Mode.

ChatGPT Plans: Free vs Plus vs Pro vs Team

Plan Price Models Key extras
Free $0 GPT-4o (limited) Web search, DALL-E, file uploads
Plus $20/mo GPT-4o, o3, o4-mini 5x more messages, Canvas, Voice, Custom GPTs
Pro $200/mo All models + o1 Pro Unlimited access, extended o3 thinking time
Team $30/user/mo Same as Plus No training on your data, admin dashboard, shared GPTs
Enterprise Custom All models SSO, SOC 2, longer context, dedicated support

For most users, Plus at $20/mo is the sweet spot — it unlocks o3/o4-mini reasoning models and Advanced Voice Mode. If you only need ChatGPT for occasional tasks, the free tier is surprisingly capable.

Which Model Should You Use?

ChatGPT offers multiple models — pick based on your task:

  • GPT-4o — default for everything: writing, coding, analysis, image understanding, voice. Fastest and most versatile.
  • o4-mini — fast reasoning model. Great for coding problems, step-by-step math, logic puzzles. Cheaper than o3.
  • o3 — best reasoning model available. Use for hard research, competitive programming, complex multi-step problems. Slower and more expensive.
  • GPT-4o mini — lightest model, available via API. Fastest and cheapest but less capable.

Rule of thumb: Start with GPT-4o. If the answer feels shallow or incorrect, try o4-mini or o3 — they "think longer" before responding.

ChatGPT Tools: Code Interpreter, DALL-E, Canvas & More

  • Code Interpreter (Advanced Data Analysis) — runs Python in a sandbox. Upload CSVs, Excel files, images. Ask for charts, statistical analysis, data cleaning. Outputs downloadable files.
  • DALL-E 3 — generates images from text descriptions. Integrated directly into chat — just ask "create an image of..." Access free with limits, unlimited on Plus/Pro.
  • Web Browsing — searches the web in real time. Useful for recent events, current prices, and verifying facts beyond the training cutoff.
  • Canvas — a side-by-side document editor. Useful for writing and coding collaboratively. ChatGPT can edit specific sections without rewriting everything.
  • Advanced Voice Mode — real-time voice conversation with emotion and interruption support. Available on iOS/Android app (Plus plan).

Best Prompting Tips

Most ChatGPT outputs are mediocre because the prompts are vague. These techniques consistently improve results:

Role prompting

Start with "You are a senior [role] with expertise in [domain]." This sets the lens for the response.

You are a senior Python developer. Review this code for security vulnerabilities: [paste code]

Chain-of-thought

Add "think step by step" or "reason through this carefully" for math, logic, and multi-step problems.

Few-shot examples

Show 2-3 examples of the format you want before asking for the real output. Works especially well for formatting, tone, and structured data.

Specify the output format

End your prompt with "Respond in bullet points", "Return as JSON", or "Write this as a table". ChatGPT follows explicit format instructions reliably.

ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini

Feature ChatGPT Plus Claude Pro Gemini Advanced

ChatGPT API vs Web Interface

The ChatGPT web app and the OpenAI API are separate products. The API lets you integrate GPT models into your own apps — you pay per token (e.g. GPT-4o is $2.50/$10 per 1M tokens input/output). The web app subscription ($20/mo Plus) does not include API access. See the OpenAI API guide for setup details.

Monitor ChatGPT & OpenAI Status

ChatGPT goes down. Prismix tracks real-time OpenAI status, 30-day uptime, and sends instant alerts when ChatGPT or the API is unavailable — so you know in seconds, not minutes.
