Big news: Anthropic has a new version of a Mythos-class model coming later today called Claude Fable, according to a person with knowledge of the release. It’s a neutered version of Mythos with safeguards to protect against its misuse either in cybersecurity hacks or the construction of bioweapons, the person said.
For those who have been living under a rock, Anthropic first previewed Mythos in April, describing it as an ultra-powerful model that could find hundreds of new security vulnerabilities in decades-old software. The hype and fear surrounding Mythos was so great that it even pushed the Trump Administration to rethink its light-touch approach to regulating the AI industry, as Leo and I wrote about here.
Claude Fable, which will be unveiled in the next few hours, will be about twice as expensive as today’s most advanced Claude Opus models, the person said.
That’s pricey, especially since many developers today are already complaining about how high AI costs are. But it’s not as bad as many people were probably expecting, based on the initial Mythos pricing—five times higher than Opus—that Anthropic shared in its April launch blog post. (Sources first reported on some aspects of today’s model launch.)
