Thermal paste PSA for old GPUs

Mirrored from r/LocalLLaMA for archival readability. Support the source by reading on the original site.

I know many of us are using older GPUs like the 3090 because they work great. I just replaced the thermal paste and am seeing consistently 10 C lower temperatures. The old paste was cracking and like dry dust when I removed it.

This made the difference between super loud fans and inaudible fans when running.

Also, it's a cheap and quick thing to do. Don't break your cards though be careful.
